Price $275.00Information on equine biomechanics, or movement, is often presented from the point of view of human needs. Veterinary clinicians are focused on assessing the mechanical and physiological aspects of the body, for the purpose of diagnosing and treating disease or the effects of trauma. Trainers and riding coaches are focused on the ability of the horse to perform in a particular sport. These approaches tend to emphasize the physical, leaving aside any mental, emotional, or cultural aspects.
The approach to equine movement in this course is centered on the living horse and how he or she functions in his or her environment. Beginning with that environmental interface, the skin, we review the connective tissues, and then move through the body from head to tail, including the poll, neck, torso, hooves, and limbs; explore how the condition of certain organs can affect movement; and end with a basic survey of locomotion.
Our orientation is from the point of view of the horse. It considers not only how the body is designed to move, but how it senses and responds to stimuli, and how it copes with the demands of maintaining homeo-stasis, repair, and healing as well as the necessity to move from place to place. It also takes into account the effects of living with humans, as well as the concerns that humans have for their horses in daily life.
